Oldest Building

The tower of Cascade Hall, built in 1883 on what is now called the Oregon State Hospital campus. It is the main entrance to the "J" building, believed to be the oldest, intact building in the city. The 1975 film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, winner of 5 Academy Awards was filmed on this location. The controversial and crumbling Oregon State Hospital, much of which is in disrepair and no longer used for patients and parts of which were under discussion for demolition, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 6, 2008. I wonder what this style of architecture is or who built it, it's so different from anything here.

Nice picture. It almost looks like you were on the roof for this shot. Were you? Or is that just an illusion?

YETG, as the article linked to states, Wilbur Boothby was the architect. Salem State Hospital was built during a nation-wide surge in state-funded insane asylum construction that occurred in the mid to late 19th century. Many of the asylums were grand structures with ornamental architecture.

ethan, I was actually standing on the sidewalk outside the dentist office a couple blocks away, waiting for my husband. I shot it over the rooftops of lower buildings. I have driven by this facility for over thirty years and had never seen this tower as from the adjacent streets, it is hidden by large trees. The building complex is itself on a knoll and from this angle was visible above the treetops. It pays to look up!

I really enjoyed your photos. We take too much for granted! Thanks for reminding me how lucky we are to be in Oregon.
