City Daily Photo Theme Day

Today is theme day for the City Daily Photo community. This month's theme is 'circle/sphere'.

The round glass in the windows in the round, turreted tower, I believe are original. Now the Globe Travel business, this is the Capital National Bank building which I previously featured [here], and [here].

Theme Day - Books

The State of Oregon was granted ownership of Sections 16 and 36 of each township by the federal government at statehood in 1859. The intent of this land grant was to provide a source of revenue to fund public education. When this land is leased or sold, exchanged (for better management purposes), easements granted, or land donations received, these books contain the resulting deeds.

The first deed in the first book, dated July 13, 1868, is for the sale of 5 lots of school lands totaling 44.53 acres for the sum of $89.06.

To hold a book, containing hand-written documents, 140 years old is very cool.

Theme Day - Sister City

Gimhae, Korea is one of two sister cities to Salem. Gimhae is located at the southeastern tip of Korean peninsula. It borders Gangseo-gu, and Changwon on the southwest, and the Nakdonggang River divides Gimhae and Milyang on the north. As I haven't attended any city council meetings, I do not know just what having a sister city entails. The only reference I could find concerned the minutes from the April 2007 meeting:

Support for the Sister City programs will continue; approved the
transfer of $3,200 from General Fund contingencies for the Mayor and
one Council Member to travel to Gimhae, South Korea; and join Sister
Cities International in the next fiscal year at a cost of $877.

From photos on the Gimhae website, it looks like a beautiful city with similar weather and seasons to our area. I hope to learn more about Gimhae and it's relation to Salem.

August Theme Day "Metal"

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day, and for August the theme is 'metal'.

This is the "Eco Earth Globe" at Riverfront Park in downtown Salem. It began life as a large pressurized tank, known as the "acid ball", used by Boise Cascade for their paper mill operation. The steel ball, 26 feet in diameter, was built in Portland in 1960 and pushed by tugboat up the Willamette River to the former mill site. The mill was closed in 1982 and the property acquired by the City. The 22-acre parcel was opened as Riverfront Park in 1996.

Two-inch ceramic tiles were attached to the ball ( 86,115 in total ) to form the continents and seas and 200 ceramic icons, which were created by students and professional artists.

CDP Theme Day -- Local Shop

This is my favorite 'corner' store. Run by the Zielinski family, the store offers Oregon-grown fruit, vegetables, nuts, berries and vegetables in season, and regional gourmet items. They are open year-round and always have the freshest vegetables available.

Starting late May and continuing throughout the growing season, the Shortcake and Espresso Stand opens with strawberry shortcakes and Tillamook ice cream. Marionberries, raspberries, blueberries and peaches are added as they come in season.

And they make fresh donuts throughout the day. I especially like the strawberry flavored and in the fall, cider!

City Daily Photo theme for May is 'Numbers'. There are 181 members posting today from cities around the world -- see them HERE. I was going to post a photo of a local gasoline pump, but it is too depressing.

This is the main post office on 25th St. SE and the zip code for a large area of town.

City Daily Photo Theme Day -- Murals

This Vaudeville-style mural was painted in 1984 on the back or east exterior wall of the historic Elsinore Theatre by the late Professor James Mattingly. The subjects of the 4-story mural are Theda Bara (Cleopatra), Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich and W. C. Fields. Thanks to the parking lot at the corner of Church and Ferry Streets, the mural is visible from the street.
