Graceful

On the lake at Spinnaker Point, south of McGilchrist, near the airport. Stone Quarry Lake, which started life as a gravel pit, is a popular spot for Canadian Geese and other migratory birds.

April??

We are experiencing an unusual winter-like cold front which so far has brought snow, rain, sleet and hail with sun breaks in between! This is extremely worrisome for the fruit farmers of the Columbia River Gorge. At stake are budding and blooming trees which normally would bring a harvest of 300 tons of cherries, apples and pears worth $110 million.

This Old House

Worthington House

In 1990, the state government decided to relocate, rather than demolish, several houses to make way for the new North Mall Office Building complex, just south of D Street and between Summer and Winter streets. The houses were then restored and are now used as office buildings.

Sorry...

I had forgotten that one shouldn't walk the Capital grounds without a few peanuts in your pocket. The squirrels have trained people well. When they see you approaching, they scamper toward you and wait, and will even take a peanut right from your hand. Sorry to disappoint this little cutie; I will remember to fill my pockets next time.

Lunch in the Park

A great place for lunch at Mission Mill Museum. This is Mill Race that I featured on April theme day here as it has been channeled through the complex. The large red building is the former Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

Star Trees

Five giant Sequoias were planted in 1942 to honor Willamette University's 100th anniversary. They are referred to as the “Star Trees", as they were planted symmetrically, so that their tops form a five-point star framing the sky. They are reported to be the tallest trees on any U.S. university campus. The Star Trees are located north of Willamette University's Waller Hall along State Street (across from the Capitol).

Flipping Houses?

Not sure if this house is being converting to a 2-story, or just getting a new foundation. I love how the front porch is still attached! Found this in an older neighborhood along Ferry Street near 20th I think. Homes in this neighborhood were built in the early 1900's. It is good to see them restored.

City Daily Photo Theme Day--"Water"

The mill race as it flows through the grounds of the Mission Mill Museum.

According to the Salem Public Library, Oregon Historic Photograph Collections, this race has quite a history. It was created by the early pioneers to divert water from Mill Creek for use by local industries. In the 1870's it provided water for the Pioneer Oil Company at this site. When the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill was built here (which still stands is open for tours), it powered the gears and belts which ran the entire mill operation. Continuing through the Willamette University campus, it powered a city generating station at Liberty & Trade Streets, and a lumber mill which stood where it emptied into the Willamette River.

More then 170 members of City Daily Photo have joined in this month for theme day -- water! Please enjoy a visit to a few cities that interest you.
